The History of the Pitbull

Pictures

The dog that is most commonly known as a "Pitbull" did not start out in America. The Pitbull originated in England around the 1800s where they was first called bulldogs because their breed looked a lot like an English bulldog. These bulldogs were used as "bait bulls" where they would make bulls mad for entertainment of the people. This was eventually seen as inhumane and they made it illegal. After that they were bred with a terrier which made them smaller. When the immigrants migrated to the United States they were then renamed in 1898 as American Pitbull Terriers. These dogs at the time were medium sized dogs that were best liked for their loyalty and companionship. They were used on family farms to protect the homestead, help with hunting and hearing, and also be a great friend to children.

During WWI there were many posters or postcards that pictures of the Pitbull on them. They were the most liked dog during this time and looked at as a hero. In the vintage photos you can see pictures of the dogs with soldiers during that time. Then in the 1930s the American Kennel Club decided they would allow Pitbulls to compete in dog competitions, but before that they would need to change their name. They changed the name to American Staffordshire Terrier.
